This is a true classic and is one of the few coffees in the world that is known for the name of the people who are mainly responsible for growing and processing it rather than the name its region of origin.
This coffee is grown on island in Indonesia named Sumatra and gets it name from the Mandailing people who live in the north of the Island of Sumatra. It is known as much for its smooth, full bod as its rich, complex taste.
Sumatra Mandheling coffee is frequently described as earthy and intense with an herbal aroma. With just enough acidity to provide a vibrancy, Mandheling coffee often exhibits tones of sweet chocolate and licorice. Sumatra Mandheling coffee grows between 2,500 and 5,000 feet above sea level. The coffee is often roasted to a Dark or Medium-Dark Roast in order to bring out its sweet taste and earthy qualities.
This coffee also goes well with cold brewed specialty coffee drinks (i.e.espresso drinks), and you can use milk or cream without losing much flavor.
